UK Wife Carrying Race 2014
March 17, 2024, Dorking, London, United Kingdom: Competitors take part in the UK Wife Carrying Race in Dorking, England. The 16th UK Wife Carrying Race was held on The Nower in Dorking, with couples from around the UK, and worldwide. Nineteen couples, who are not required to be married and who can use any one of the six recognised wife carrying positions, lined up on the rainy start line. Competitors have to hurdle hay bales on their way uphill to the half way point of the 380m course, and are met by volunteers throwing buckets of cold water at them on the return leg. March 17, 2024, Rafah, Gaza Strip, Palau: People gather to get food relief in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah. The United Nations is warning that famine in Gaza is ''almost inevitable.'' Palestinians living in Gaza are struggling with extreme shortages of food, clean water, and medicine. Several countries, including Jordan, France, Egypt, the U.S., the United Arab Emirates, and now Germany, are coordinating airdrops of humanitarian aid to help alleviate the crisis, and the U.S. military is working to build a temporary port on Gaza's coastline to bring in additional aid. Baltimore Bridge Collapse: Cargo Ship Crash Kills 6 Workers
March 26, 2024, Baltimore, Maryland, USA: At 01:27 EST, a Singaporean cargo vessel DALI crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, struck one of its support pillars and the structure collapsed in 40 seconds. Eight people were working on road repairs, when the cargo ship hit, two of them were saved from the water. Six people died. The crew on the ship issued a 'mayday' call before the accident. The bridge extends over the Patapsco River and is an essential link of Interstate-695 the Baltimore Beltway. March 26, 2024, Baltimore, Maryland, USA: The Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge hours after at 01:27 EDT, the main spans of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, across the Patapsco River in Baltimore Harbor, Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed in 40 seconds, after the container ship DALI struck one of its support pillars. Not the first bridge to collapse after one of its supports was hit. A 2018 report for the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure catalogued 35 major bridge collapses that were caused by boat strikes between 1960 and 2015, killing a total of 342 people. 18 crashes in the USA.
