Christmas Tree Throwing World Championship 2026
January 4, 2026, Weidenthal, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany: A participant throwing a fir tree as part of the wacky sport of Christmas Tree Throwing, at the 18th World Championship. The triathlon event featuring three disciplines: distance, height, and slinging. Based on a Scandinavian tradition known as the Knut-Fest. The competition uses a standard, freshly cut, undecorated Christmas tree, typically measuring about 1.5 meters (5 ft). Competitors judges on their total combined performance across all three throwing styles. Distance Throw (Weitwurf): Similar to javelin, participants hold the tree by the trunk and hurl it overarm for maximum distance. Sling Throw (Hammerwurf): A rope is attached to the stump end of the tree, which is then swung in a circle (like a hammer throw) and released for distance. Height Throw (Hochwurf): The tree is thrown in a high jump style over a bar, with the highest successfully cleared height recorded. (Credit Image: © Uwe Anspach/dpa via ZUMA Press)
